Welcome to Machine Tools Source

www.machinetoolssource.co.uk, is the place to buy a wide range of machine tools.

The term ‘machine tool’ usually refers to tools that use a power source – normally electricity - as opposed to human movement.

Machine tools are commonly used in industry, but smaller versions are increasingly used by DIY enthusiasts and hobbyists.

Some of the most commonly used machine tools include:

• Grinding machines, used to make metal machine pieces through the selective removal of metal
• Lathes, which spin a block of material to perform various functions such as cutting, sanding and drilling and are used in woodturning, metalworking and glass spinning
• Milling machines, complex tools that use a rotating cutter to move sideways, as well as in and out, to complete jobs such as slot cutting, planning, drilling, dies, inking and engraving
• Drilling machines
• Routers, high speed motorised cutting tools which can be used with a number of different materials including wood, metal and foam

In the past, machine operators would manually move a part through the process, but now it is possible to combine several different machine tools together in what is known as a machining centre.

These are digitally automated using the latest CNC – computer numerical control – technology.

CNC systems allow operators to programme the machines so that they can produce the same part over and over again with minimal supervision – saving labour costs, increasing productivity and boosting profits.

Machine Tools

A machine tool is a powered mechanical device. They are typically used to fabricate metal components of machines by machining which is described as the selective removal of metal. The term machine tool usually refers to those which use a power source other than human movement, but they can also be powered by people if appropriately set up.

Machine tools can be powered from a variety of sources. As aforementioned, human power is an option. However, machine tools evolved and therefore today, most are powered by electricity. In more recent years, computers have been added to give aid their operation and provide even more flexibility to the process.

Such machines became known as computerized numerical control (CNC) machines. These machines could precisely repeat sequences over and over, and therefore could produce much more complex pieces than even the most skilled tool operators.

From the simplest to the most complex, most machine tools are capable of at least partial self-replication since they are machines, and produce machine parts as their primary function.

Examples of machine tools include: lathes, routers, drilling machines, milling machines, grinding machines, circular saws, sanders, hacksaws, table saws, mitre saws and balancing machines.
